US Horse Welfare and Rescue (USHWR) is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit established in February 2016 at Nod Hill in Avon, CT on 20 acres of land. We are dedicated to saving America’s unwanted horses from slaughter through rescue, advocacy, education, community outreach, and solution-based supportive programs. USHWR works in conjunction with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and other equine rescue organizations across the country promoting awareness and legislation to put an end to the sale and transport of America’s horses to slaughter.
USHWR’s current annual budget for 10 horses is in excess of $70,000. It grows with each horse pulled from a slaughter lot by $3500 or more plus monthly maintenance for the horse. Currently, USHWR is working diligently to help CT and MA residents keep their horses from ending up in the wrong place because of COVID-19 has left owners unable to feed and care for their horses. USHWR helps rehome these horses safely by doing thorough vet checks, site checks, microchipping, a stringent adoption contract, and frequent wellness checks.

Today the organization’s full mission has grown to also include multiple equine-assisted learning and therapy models for youth, women in crisis, veterans, dementia patients, caregivers, and more. “Our Rescue Horses Rescue The Human Spirit In Need!” For more information on how to get involved or donate please go to www.USHorseWelfare.org or email Susan at SusanMitchell@USHorseRescue.org.
